'Now we have robust guidance...' Nick Colton - BMC. Really!
It [the BMC] exists to further the interests of mountaineering as a whole, and it will succeed in this only in so far as it receives the full support of each and every mountaineer... It should be needless to add that there will be no attempt to introduce anything so foolish as a qualification scheme for 'mountain leaders',':'Introduction' of the book - 'The First Fifty Years of the British Mountaineering Council - A Political History.' G A Dummett, Pembroke College, 1946.
Mountain Clients: WHY CHANCE EVERYTHING - ON ANYTHING LESS? Many have... Welcome to the site that is dedicated to traditional (no bolts) climbing/mountaineering; the site that offers advice to potential mountain clients, their relatives and the parents of young people; climbers supposedly protected under The (1995) Young Persons Safety Act. Essential Reading: ´Where the Mountain Casts it Shadow´. by Maria Coffey. & High Crimes-Everest in an Age of Greed by M.Kodas
In 1988 the following 'letter' was published in a specialist magazine entitled: 'Bogus Guides Certificate', written by Steve D. Mitchell on behalf of The Association of British Mountain Guides (BMG):
"Sir, The Association of British Mountain Guides has asked me to write warning your readers about people posing as mountain guides. We, are therefore very concerned, that any member of the public is subjected to an - inferior and probably - dangerous service, by someone who may call himself a Mountain Guide... To operate with an 'unqualified' guide will almost certainly be - unsafe but may easily result in the loss of hard-earned holiday money..."
We do not know just how many - readers, BMG clients, lost not only their 'hard earned holiday money' but also a - hard earned life since that pompous letter....On the 28th July, 2007, the President of the UIAGM (their logo is your assurance of...) / mountain guides died after he fell into a crevasse whilst crossing a wet glacier - unroped.
In 1997, after many fatal accidents (since 1964 at least) to their clients, false claims advertising offering false guarantee's/ensurities by the Association of British Mountain Guides (BMG), were removed from the pages of High magazine (which changed its name to High Mountain Sport- the name as since changed again) the 'official' magazine of the - British Mountaineering Council (BMC) at the behest of the Association of Mountain Clients, by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
Our attempts to publish the true statistic of fatal accidents (1964-2007) involving clients of the: BMG/UIAGM/IFMGA (we are the only - qualified mountain guides) have met with a wall-of-silence. Maybe, just maybe, these 'official' organisations have something to hide... You may ask - why, didn't the British Mountaineering Council, the representative, but-would-be-governing body of climbing/ mountaineering, with a responsibility to young climbers, have that false advertising removed earlier from the pages of its magazine?
Why did The Sports Council, contrary to the requirements of an EC Directive, give away the management lease for Plas-Y-Brenin, the National Mountain Centre (whos' £27,000 advertising agenda attracts many young climbers etc) in Capel Curig, North Wales, for nil consideration along with a rolling grant of £450,000 per annum - to the British Mountaineering Council and the (supposedly) autonomous, commercial organisation the - Association of British Mountain Guides? Given that organisations safety record or, lack of one - why? The investigation continues...
Climbing/Mountaineering has become somewhat - callous and shabby - why?
The British Mountaineering Council, looking after the interest of all - hill walkers, climbers & mountaineers.?? By introducing; providing 10,000 bolts (in 2007) with which to deliberately damage our environment - see Internet Reference Page. Can't Climb? Bolt!
